Discussion/Action
 
The board discussed the board policy describing the chancellor search process and voted to begin that process. A special meeting will be held soon for trustees to discuss details of the recruitment. Board President Wagner pledged that the search process will be open and exhaustive in order to find the best candidate for our district. Dr. David Bugay, Vice Chancellor, Human Resources, was appointed as the board designee under the policy.
 

Reports and Comments

 
  • Vice President Nancy M. Padberg mentioned that she is serving on the committee to select members for the SC Communication Arts advisory committee and attended the Presidents' Cup basketball event. She suggested that the meeting be adjourned in memory of former SC administrator Bob Bosanko.
  • Trustee William O. Jay stated that over 400 people attended the funeral of Bob Bosanko, a former SC Dean of Admissions and Interim President who retired 28 years ago. He recommended attending the Japanese teapot exhibit currently in the SC Gallery through March 11.
  • Trustee David B. Lang attended the SC teapot exhibit and commended this fine artistic display. He congratulated SC on winning the Presidents' Cup. He thanked everyone for participating in the survey of District Services and conveyed appreciation for the feedback.
  • Student Trustee Bi'Anca Bailey attended both Presidents' Cup events.
 
  • Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur remarked that a number of staff members attended the Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA) conference last week. Five presentations were made by our staff on topics including ATEP and the online learning programs and services at both colleges. Also, Vice Chancellor Bob Bramucci was a well-received keynote speaker. The district wide goal setting process is well underway with recommendations to be made to the Board this spring. 
  • SC President Tod Burnett's written report included mention of: student built composting system on the greenhouse grounds; History Professor Bill Billingsley receiving the Numan V. Bartley research award; Veterans Memorial dedication scheduled for April 29 with over 700 guests expected; "Rachel's Challenge" presentation sponsored by the college's Five Minute Project; Big Fish Small Pot, 4th International Small Teapot Competition; a $200,000 contribution from the Lawrence Boyer Estate which will be applied to the Osher Endowment Matching Campaign. 
 
  • IVC President Glenn Roquemore's written report included mention of: 23rd annual Astounding Inventions event with 350 elementary and middle school students competing for $9,000 in cash prices; IVC Debate Team ranks second in the country; Pink Zone fundraising event by the basketball teams to raise funds for Women's Basketball Coaches Association breast cancer awareness efforts; Homecoming and second annual Presidents' Cup between the IVC Lasers and SC Gauchos; and first IVC2IVC Lecture Series featuring Professor Fumiko Ishii
 
  • ATEP Provost Randy Peebles' written report included mention of: hosting 50 8th grade students from Orange County schools Career Tech Day; contracting with Orange County Business Council to provide detailed research in the four potential college program focus areas for ATEP; and a new collaboration with UCI Extension and the Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) to offer classes.

  • nomination of Trustee John S. Williams for the Marian Bergeson Award of the Orange County School Boards Association. The award is presented annually to a trustee who has provided outstanding governing board service and community service to promote and enhance public education.
  • endorsement of the nomination of Linda Renne for the California Community College Classified Employee of the Year Awards Program sponsored by the State Chancellor's Office.  Ms. Renne is a senior administrative assistant for the IVC Matriculation Office. 
  • development and update of the educational and facilities master plan.
  • revised instructional materials and laboratory fees for 2010-11 academic year.
  • lease agreement with Park Place Lexus to use a portion of the SC campus for five years with three five year options.
  • out of state travel for SC students and faculty to the Western Psychological Association Annual Convention in Cancun, Mexico and the Southwestern Anthropological Association Annual Conference in Reno, Nevada.
  • SC Study Abroad Program in Spanish language studies to Santander, Spain for the summer of 2010.
  • out of state travel for an IVC honors field study course in Hawaii.
  • accepting a Community Collaborative Grant to SC and IVC for $319,000 from the State Chancellor's Office to fund career exploration programs for middle and high school students.
  • SC and IVC curriculum revisions for 2010-11 academic year.
  • SC and IVC community education courses, presenters and compensation for Summer 2010.
 

Presentations

  • Dr. Bob Bramucci, Vice Chancellor, Technology and Learning Services; Harry Parmer, SC Chief of Police; and Will Glenn, IVC Chief of Police, gave presentations on emergency preparedness and disaster recovery planning. Click here to view the slides.

  • Reports from the academic senates on curriculum review were made by SC Professors Bob Cosgrove and David Francisco and IVC Professors Lisa Davis Allen and Jodi Titus.

 
Viewing Board Meeting on TV and Online
 

The Board meeting will be broadcast on Friday, February 26 and Saturday, February 27 at 7pm, on Saddleback College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33.  SC TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday, February 28 at 7pm. The meeting will be available for viewing online later in the week.
