COMMENDATIONS ...................................................................

SHERPA TEAM COMMENDED FOR NATIONAL TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION AWARD

Chancellor Gary Poertner commended the district's Sherpa team for their national recognition as a “Model of Technology Innovation on Campus” by Campus Technology magazine at the Campus Technology conference in Boston. Ten institutions received the 2012 Innovators Awards from more than 350 entries. Our district was honored along with Stanford University, Purdue University and others. SOCCCD was selected for its Sherpa software project, a recommendation engine that provides suggestions to students to help them complete their academic plan.

COLLEGE COMPLETION AGENDA

Chancellor Gary Poertner provided an overview of the College Completion Agenda, and Saddleback Dean Kevin O'Connor and IVC Dean Kathy Werle reviewed the eight Student Success Task Force recommendations. Each recommendation will be discussed in more detail at future meetings. Click here to view the presentation.

THE BOARD APPROVED .............................................................

  • All consent calendar items. Academic items were approved as revised (Exhibit A; H.1 through H.8:  Items contingent upon approval of item “G” on the agenda) and classified personnel actions were approved. For additional information, please contact the Chancellor, College President or appropriate Vice Chancellor.
  • An award renewal of $169,487 from the Board of Governors California Community College Chancellor’s
    Office for the Enrollment Growth and Retention Program to support an increase of students enrolling in the Saddleback College Nursing Program.
  • Revised project contracts for the IVC Life Sciences building and SC Learning Resource Center.
  • Revised SOCCCD, Irvine Valley College, and ATEP vision and mission statements.
  • A contract with Nimble Consulting for an amount not to exceed $252,000 and Synergy Software Solutions for an amount not to exceed $167,328 to support district-wide software projects for Fiscal Year 2012-13.
  • A contract with Neudesic, LLC for an amount not to exceed $1,300,000 for Student Information System (SIS) User-requested enhancements, mandated changes and maintenance.

  • Renewal of contracts with the Foundation for California Community Colleges and Blackboard to provide critical learning management services to the colleges for a total amount not to exceed $1,123,795.15.
  • Board Policy Revisions - BP-104: Student Member of the Board of Trustees, BP-166: Health Benefits-Board Members, BP-170: Board Member Absence from the State, BP-3205: Insurance, BP-3300: Gifts, BP-3600: Disposition of District Property, BP-3605: Employee Travel Program, BP-4205: Disciplinary Action of Classified Personnel, BP-5520: Accreditation.
  • Irvine Valley College management reorganization of four dean positions with no fiscal impact and no reclassification of positions.
  • A retainer agreement with the legal firm Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo for specialized legal
    services pertaining to labor relations, labor negotiations, and other community college legal matters for Fiscal Year 2012-13 for amount not to exceed $275,000.

REPORTS..............................................................................

  • Trustee Jay welcomed Dr. Jim Wright to the board and highlighted his previous accomplishments. Trustee Meldau recalled the warm welcome that Trustee Wright provided to him when he joined the board. Trustee Milchiker commented on her admiration for Trustee Wright's contributions to SC and is pleased he will serve on the board. She also enjoyed attending the SC bridge dedication and was pleased that it honored the maintenance staff and their hard work. She recently enjoyed two performing arts events at SC. Trustee Padberg welcomed Trustee Wright, commenting on the widely recognized quality of his work in our district. Trustee Wright also attended the SC bridge dedication, and remarked that the steel construction should require little or no maintenance. He sincerely thanked everyone for a warm welcome. Trustee Lang offered his well wishes and welcomed to Trustee Wright to the board.

  • Saddleback College - President Tod Burnett's report included: new bridge dedicated to facilities and maintenance department; Automotive Technology Program awarded $50,000 for student scholarships; 44 students graduated from the medical assisting program; 26 nursing students admitted to the summer RN new grad residency program to gain industry experience; New Learning Resource Center to open by Aug. 20th; a welcome to Christopher McDonald, Dean, Math, Science & Engineering; Caroline Durdella, Director, Planning, Research & Accreditation; David Anderson, Director, Emeritus Instructional Program; and Cadence Wynter, Dean, Social & Behavioral Sciences.
  • Irvine Valley College - President Glenn Roquemore's report included: Professor Dan Rivas participating in a three-year National Endowment for the Humanities project; IVC students Kevin Ringuette and Melanie Kasanchi named Orange Empire Conference's Character Champion award winners for 2011-12; Math/CS/Engineering faculty completed the curriculum process for developing a pre-engineering Certificate of Proficiency; IVC welcomed new Director of Research, Planning and Accreditation, Dr. Craig Hayward; new accelerated writing course introduced; IVC men's basketball players held a clinic for students at a local middle school.
  • Business Services - Vice Chancellor Debra Fitzsimons' report included: Completion of Saddleback College James B. Utt Memorial Learning Resources Center Project; Fiscal Services is in
    the process of closing the district books for the year ending June 30, 2012; IVC Life Sciences Project’s new projected completion date is February 2013.
  • Human Resources - Vice Chancellor David Bugay's report included:  information provided to all classified bargaining unit employees who are eligible for the Supplemental Early Retirement Program. All eligible employees who wish to participate must enroll by October 5, 2012.

The board meeting will be available for viewing online later in the week at www.socccd.edu. Television broadcasts are scheduled for 7 pm on Friday, August 3 and Saturday, August 4 on Saddleback College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33.  SC TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday, August 5 at 7 pm.
