
State of the District Highlights Innovation, Student Success, and Community Engagement
IRVINE, CA – The South Orange County Community College District (SOCCCD) held its highly anticipated State of the District event at Irvine Valley College, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to student success and academic excellence. With the theme “Students Are the Heart of Our Mission,” the event showcased the district’s transformative initiatives, outstanding student achievements, and future-forward plans for advancing higher education in Orange County.
The event was opened by SOCCCD President of the Board, Carolyn Inmon, who introduced Orange County Board of Supervisor’s Vice President, Katrina Foley to lead in the pledge. Additionally, SOCCCD Trustees were in attendance to support including Vice President Ryan Dack, Trustee Lisa Bartlett, Trustee Tim Jemal, Trustee Marcia Milchiker, and Trustee Terri Rydell. Mayor of Irvine, Larry Agran was also in the audience along with the offices of Congressman Dave Min and Assembly Member Cottie Petrie-Norris.
Chancellor Julianna M. Asperin Barnes delivered an inspiring address, emphasizing the district’s dedication to fostering innovation and equity, and reaffirming its mission to provide educational opportunities for all students, thereby strengthening its economic impact on Orange County. Additionally, sat down with Saddleback College President, Dr. Elliot Stern and Irvine Valley College President, Dr. John Hernandez for an engaging conversation, underscoring the importance of partnerships, workforce development, and enhanced student support services.
SOCCCD continues to lead the way in expanding access to education through innovative programs, state-of-the-art facilities, and a deep commitment to student success. The unveiling of the 2023-2024 Annual Report at the event detailed the district’s accomplishments, including increased transfer rates, expanded career education programs, and strengthened community partnerships.
