Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second piece of information when logging into an online service. Common types of MFA include a one-time use code sent via text, sent via email, or sent via notification to a mobile device application. This second piece of information, used alongside your username and password, enhances your account security.

Benefits of MFA

  • Stronger security against cyber threats and phishing attacks.

  • Added protection for your student records and sensitive data.

  • Peace of mind knowing your account is more secure.

How to Prepare:

  • Extra step in login: MFA will require an additional verification step, but it only takes a few seconds and significantly boosts security.

  • Device access needed: You will need access to your phone or email to verify logins. Make sure your contact information is up to date.

  • Setup required: Instructions are located here on how to enroll in MFA to ensure a smooth transition.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Multi-factor authentication uses two pieces of information to verify identity.

An example of multi-factor authentication is a bank ATM PIN used in addition to a bank ATM card. Both the PIN (something known) and the bank ATM card (something possessed) are needed to verify identity.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is crucial in higher education because it provides an extra layer of security by requiring users to verify their identity with more than just a password. This significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access by cybercriminals to sensitive student data, financial information, and administrative systems, which may be the targets of cyberattacks due to the large amount of personal information stored on campus networks.

Microsoft (MS) Authenticator is a free app that helps you sign in to self-enrolled accounts. Once you download the app to your smartphone and link it to your college student account, you will receive a notification whenever there is log-in attempt using your account credentials.

When logging into your account, you will need to access the app on your smartphone and enter the code. This will not be needed if you are logging in from campus.

Multi-factor authentication is only necessary if you are (a) accessing email from off campus and (b) using a web browser. Note that email can be accessed in several ways without having to use two-factor authentication:

  1. Web email from on campus
  2. Smartphone or mobile client (e.g. tablet)
  3. Outlook app (included in Microsoft Office)

To troubleshoot software issues pertaining to multi-factor authentication, college employees should place a work order through their technology services departments.

There is a quick link on the district website titled, SSO Portal, for the single sign-on portal. This portal is where the web email app is located. Click on Quick Links, then SSO Portal and follow the same multi-factor authentication process as you do for remote access to the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. Once authenticated you will be able to access the Outlook Web App.

This portal also provides access to other applications such as Banner, Canvas, Jaggaer, etc. without additional authentication. Gradually, new apps will be added. You can bookmark https://apps.socccd.edu to quickly access the single sign-on portal.

  1. Use the Single Sign-on Portal to login to MySite using your Student ID number and password.
  2. Click on "My Information" from the drop down menu (top left page).
  3. Click on the "Update Profile" link.
  4. Scroll down to the "Personal" data fields and make your edits.
